Loose Ends

“The act of sewing and working with traditionally coded women’s “craft” plays a role in my experimentation at this time and these works represent the loose ends that I’ve had to release in the last year. ”

Can you give us an artist statement for the series you will be showcasing in March for Snapped?

“The events of the last year (2020) have resulted in a decreased ability to focus my mind. Despite my efforts to overcome, to stay productive, I’ve largely fallen short. I have tried an array of methods ranging from: planners, timers, alarms, emails to myself, voice messages, and scraps of paper taped to the wall. Most significantly, I’ve noticed that a separation from social media and news outlets has helped and I’ve engaged in traditional handcraft practices, like sewing masks.

The act of making a mask provides a diminutive activity that feels like I’m contributing something to others. When the shortage of masks became apparent in the early onset of the pandemic, it was not the corporate entity that banded together for a solution, it was the individual, in their living room, sewing to contribute to others. The act of sewing and working with traditionally coded women’s “craft” plays a role in my experimentation at this time and these works represent the loose ends that I’ve had to release in the last year.

Each piece displays a photograph held in space by sewing needles with thread running through the eye of each needle. The photographs utilize an abstracted color palette and are printed on Kozo.“

Tell us about the process for the series? 

“I will be digitally printing on Kozo. The process has the appearance of ambiguity because of the frailty of the paper, but it is a fully digital process. (Some of which have sewn embellished details.) “

Sharifa Moore The Artist:

Sharifa Moore is an interdisciplinary artist, independent curator, and educator. Sharifa is the Deputy Director for Denver Digerati. She holds a BA in Art History and BFA in Photography from the University of Colorado Denver and is currently a MH candidate in Visual Studies.
