Meet The Artists

What Type of art can we expect to see at the show?

“My figures for ‘Spectra’s Summer Sofubi Special’ are a mix of 1 of a kind and micro-run (i.e. small batch) releases, and they range from cute, to ugly – but are all basically kimokawaii (Japanese for ‘ugly cute’). I’ve gone for mostly bright and colorful paint applications, but have also thrown in a touch of the dark and macabre (it’s fun to mix it up, no?).”

Artist Bio:

“I’m a maker of Japanese soft vinyl (sofubi) figures. ‘Toys’ is another word for the objects, but ‘Figurines’ doesn’t really ring true. That’s more something creepy on your grandma’s vanity cabinet shelf.

Anyway, I’m more or less self-taught in my career/art/pursuits, but have many previous makers (and lots of nostalgia) to thank for the inspirations and methods I use. I make my own original characters as well as licensed figures (Ultraman Monsters (kaiju) Godzilla, etc), and I occasionally team up with other creative types to bring their work to life in the soft vinyl medium. My true bread and butter is painting – which I’ve done almost every single day, using my airbrush and assorted busted-up paintbrushes, for the past 12+ years (and long before that as a model and miniature builder – back when it was just my ‘hobby’).

I also do technical rock climbing and ride mountain bikes downhills, and I like cooking tasty fooders and drinking tasty beers. But that’s sorta useless info, no?

What Type of art can we expect to see at the show?

“I will have a few mini runs of toys- peanut killer, Gilly, and something else. A nice stack of one-offs. Randall’s trashvan, and a few other smaller 3D sculptures. A nice assortment of paintings. Oh… and a good amount of bits and bobs- stickers, prints, patches, and goodies.”

Artist Bio:

“I am an artist living and working and playing in Portland Oregon. I really just love working with my hands. Whether I am carving a piece of driftwood and stacking pieces of beach trash, sculpting and painting my characters, or moving paint around on paper to realize what’s inside my head. It’s always just playtime between my eyeballs and brain, and my two hands.”

What Type of art can we expect to see at the show?

We will have a representation of most of our original vinyl toys as well as a few collaborations.”

Artist Bio:

“Grumble Toy are independent toy-makers based out of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. We are a husband and wife duo, Chris Bryan and Ainsley Sturko. We have been producing vinyl toys from our original designs since 2008 with the introduction of our character Wormrah. Currently, we now have 12 original vinyl toy designs with more on the way!”
